Getting in

How do I get into the film?

When you rent, the film starts playing right on the rental page. A watch link also lands in your email a moment later. That link is your way back in: open it on any device and the film is there. Nothing to install, nothing to remember.

Is there a password?

No. There is no password and there never will be one. Your watch link is the only thing you need. If yours ever goes missing, write to Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM and a fresh one will be sent.

My watch link has not arrived
  1. Check your spam or promotions folder for an email from Between the Mountain and the Sky.
  2. Try searching your inbox for mountain.
  3. Give it a few minutes. Email sometimes dawdles.

You can send yourself a fresh link any time from the sign-in page. If it still will not come, email Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM and a real person will send your link over.

I think I typed my email wrong

It happens more than you would think, and it is easily fixed. If the address has a small slip in it, a .con instead of .com, or a letter out of place, your watch link went off to an address that does not exist and nothing will arrive no matter how long you wait.

Write to Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM from the address you actually use, say roughly when you paid, and we will move your rental across and send a fresh link.

Can I open the link on a different device?

Yes. The same link works on your laptop, phone, tablet, wherever you like. Open the email on the device you want to watch on and follow the link from there.

Your rental

How long is the film?

The film runs 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Is there a rating on the film?

The documentary does not have an official age rating, but the book and film are generally considered appropriate for older teens (ages 16–17+) and adults due to mature themes of loss, trauma, and emotional hardship.

How long do I have, and how many viewings?

Seven days of access from the moment you pay, and unlimited viewings inside that week. Watch it alone, watch it again with someone, on any device. The event itself ran August 12 to 19.

How much does it cost?

It was pay-what-you-want: $35 the suggested amount, $15 the lowest. Renting closed when the screening ended.

I rented a while ago and never watched it

Write to Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM with the address you rented under and we will find your rental.

Where does the money go?

40% of net proceeds will be donated to BlinkNow, the organization at the heart of this story. The rest keeps the film moving through the world.

Watching

Which devices can I watch on?

Laptop, phone, tablet, or your TV. Any modern browser works; Chrome and Firefox are the most dependable. For the TV, see Watch on your TV.

Which subtitle languages are there?

Eight languages: English (including full closed captions), Dutch, Italian, French, Hindi, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.

Pick your language right under the film, or use the CC button inside the player. Your choice sticks for the whole film.

Can I pause and come back later?

Yes. The film remembers where you stopped and offers to pick up there when you return on the same device. Pause anywhere, come back any time inside your seven days.

How do I make it full screen?

Press the full screen symbol at the bottom right of the player controls. On a phone, turning it sideways helps too. If full screen refuses to work, try Chrome or Firefox.

Can I download it to watch offline?

No, and we are sorry, because a long flight is exactly when you would want it. The film streams rather than downloads, and the link that carries it is deliberately short-lived, so there is no file to keep on your phone. You will need a connection while you watch.

Watching on your TV

What are my options?

Three good ways:

  1. HDMI cable from any laptop to the TV. The most reliable way, every time, and any inexpensive cable from a hardware store works. There is no need for an expensive one.
  2. AirPlay from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV or AirPlay-capable TV. Subtitles come along.
  3. Cast button to a Chromecast or Google TV. On an Android phone the button does not appear in our player, because Chrome for Android does not offer one: use Chrome's own menu instead, the three dots at the top right, then Cast. One caution: some Chromecast models drop subtitles. If subtitles matter to you, use HDMI or watch on the device directly.

AirPlay and Chromecast both need your phone or laptop and the TV on the same wifi network. That is the most common snag.

Full step-by-step instructions for each, ordered for your device, are on the Watch on your TV page.

Where is the button that sends the film to a TV?

There is one TV button in the player controls, next to the subtitle button. Press it and a small menu opens: AirPlay when an AirPlay device has answered on your wifi, Chromecast when a Chromecast has, and the instructions for every other way when neither has. On a phone the control bar starts collapsed: tap the small arrow at its right end to reveal the rest of the controls: volume, CC for subtitles, settings, the TV button, and full screen.

On an Android phone there is no cast button in the player and you are not missing it: Chrome for Android does not give websites one. Use Chrome's own menu, the three dots at the top right, then Cast, and pick your TV. That sends the whole screen, so turn the phone sideways and go full screen first, and leave the screen awake while the film plays.

AirPlay only appears in that menu in Safari, so on an Apple device open the film in Safari rather than another browser. If AirPlay is still not there and the TV is on the same wifi, an iPhone, iPad or Mac can still send the whole screen. On an iPhone or iPad, open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring. On a Mac, open Control Center in the menu bar and click Screen Mirroring. Pick your TV, then press play and go full screen. On a phone, turn it sideways before you do, and leave the screen awake while the film plays.

What does the AirPlay menu look like?

After you choose AirPlay from the TV button's menu, Apple's own list of nearby devices appears. Your TV shows up in that list when both are on the same wifi. Tap it and the film moves to the big screen.

Can I use my smart TV's built-in browser?

Honest answer: TV browsers are the least reliable way to watch, and we steer people away from them. AirPlay, Chromecast, or an HDMI cable from a laptop will treat you far better.

It casts, but the film never starts

Sometimes the cast connects, the television shows the title, and then it sits there loading, or the picture jumps back to phone size. When that happens the cast is working and the television is refusing the video.

Two ways around it. Send the whole screen instead of casting: on an iPhone or iPad open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring, on Android open Quick Settings and tap Cast or Smart View. Turn the phone sideways first and leave the screen awake. Or run an HDMI cable from your phone or laptop to the television, which carries the subtitles too and never argues.

Sony Bravia sets and Android TVs are the ones that come up most often here. If you have one of those, go straight to the cable and save yourself the fight.

Gifting

How do I give the film to someone?

Gifting closed with the screening. A gift already sent still works: their 7 days start when they first open it, not when it was bought.

Can I gift it to more than one person?

Each gift goes to one email address and carries a watch link of its own. New gifts cannot be bought now that the screening has ended.

Does a gift give me access too?

Not by itself: a gift belongs to the person you send it to. But there is an Add a rental for me too checkbox right under the gift form, and ticking it opens your own 7 days as part of the same payment.

Payments

Is my payment safe?

Yes. Payment happens in a dedicated secure checkout window run by our payment provider; card details never touch the film's pages.

Where is my receipt?

The receipt comes by email from the checkout, separately from your watch link. Check spam for it first if it has not appeared.

I have a question about a charge

Email Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM with a line about what happened. A real person answers billing questions as quickly as we are able.

My card was declined

No money has left your account. A declined attempt never becomes a charge, though your bank may show a pending line for a day or two that clears on its own.

The usual causes are a bank blocking a first-time international payment, or a card that will not travel. Once your bank has approved it, try again, or try a different card. If it keeps refusing, write to Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM and we will tell you what our end saw.

Which countries can watch, and what currency am I charged in?

The film plays anywhere with a connection. We do not block any country.

Prices are in US dollars. If your card is in another currency your bank does the conversion, and some banks add a fee for an international payment, which is worth knowing before you choose an amount.

Trouble

It says the video cannot play due to privacy issues

That warning is almost always the browser blocking the player, not your account. First test: open the watch page in a private or incognito window. In Chrome that is the three dots at top right, then New Incognito window. In Safari it is the File menu, then New Private Window.

If it plays there, it is a cookie setting, easy fix:

  1. In Chrome: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies, and allow them.
  2. In Safari: Settings, then Privacy, and uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking.

Reload the watch page afterwards. If the warning is still there, email Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM and we will send a backup link that plays directly.

The player will not load or the film stutters
  1. Refresh the page and press play again.
  2. If it plays a few seconds then stops, set the picture quality by hand: the settings button in the player controls, next to the volume, opens a quality menu. Pick 720p, or 480p if it is still unhappy. Automatic reaches for the sharpest picture your connection allows, and on slower wifi pinning it lower ends the stop-start. On iPhone, iPad and Safari there is no menu; the browser manages quality itself.
  3. Try a different browser. Chrome and Firefox are the most dependable.
  4. On wifi, try moving closer to the router.

Those fixes solve most playback trouble. If none of them do, we will make sure you get to watch the film: email Hello@MPWRCHANGE.COM.
